“Break-ups are hard” is probably the biggest understatement you will hear, even when the memory is still fresh in your mind and in your heart. They’re painful and an unforgiving reminder that someone you once cared about will not be in your life the same way.
Whether it was you who decided to cut the relationship ties or ended up being the one pushed out, it’s never easy. However, there are ways to remedy a broken heart, and it could start early.
The first few days of disappointment and heartache start with isolation. You’re hauled in your home, likely in bed with a pint of ice cream and the TV to keep you entertained.
We all know the “good cry” movies to watch, such as classics like “The Notebook” or “A Walk to Remember” that truly bring out the tears. They’re a true reminder of pure love and heartbreaking endings that deemed them to be the epitome of tearjerkers.
Movies to uplift your spirits
Keep in mind that there is no one solution, no magic wand to toss you into the next phase of your life. Nevertheless, there are certain steps you can follow to make things easier for yourself.
Entertainment is just one of them, and would likely be the first one to help. There’s nothing like immersing yourself into another world, and watching others sorting out their life, especially if there’s comedy involved.
Movies have a beautiful way of making us forget what is happening outside. For almost two hours, you can relate to the characters, watch them go through hardships, and be inspired on how they cross every bump in the road.
They’re the most therapeutic art form available to us, being able to grip our attention, capture our heart and, most importantly, do it while our mind wants to focus on the pain instead. So go ahead and read our suggestions below and pick a few movies that you will remember forever as being the helping hand during this despondent time in your life.
Are they Oscar winners? No. They might not release the waterworks or show fantastic performances, but they will put a smile on your face and have you firmly nodding and exclaiming that, “Yes! I’ve been there too!”.
1. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This movie is a spicy comedy of what is life without the one you once loved, and how things are not lost forever.
The movie shows the struggles of settling into a toxic routine to a point where the rest of the world around you disappears.
They are your life, your present and your future. Or, so you thought before things changed. It can be better, and even though you lost a partner, no matter what you feel now, there’s a better one out there for you.
2. The Break-Up
It’s all in the title. You might even find yourself in this situation, where you might have constant contact with your ex or even live with them. It’s safe to say that would be a mess.
Be it awkward exchanges or petty fighting over nothing whatsoever, ‘The Break Up’, will let you know that there is more than two things you can do with your frustration and anger.
They say you can either hold it in or pour it on someone else. But there’s a third option. You can let it go, and move on to better things.
3. Legally Blonde
Forget the sequel and watch the first Legally Blonde to remind yourself that life will not always go as planned.
That doesn’t mean that there is no way to go. Perhaps you will feel unsure of what to do and let’s face it, in the case of long term relationships, you might feel a little lost.
Toss your attention into something else, a hobby or a passion, because you never know where you’ll find something special.
We’re not saying you should apply to Harvard, but take it as an opportunity to get to know yourself better.
4. My Super Ex-Girlfriend
If nothing really works to get your mind off of it, perhaps a bit of revenge will work. But don’t take it out on someone else, including your ex.
The movie will show you that everyone has the right to move on with their life, and that staying scorned and fuming with rage will only work for a while.
It’s a slapstick comedy, with obvious humor, but a good enough movie about “the dark side of things”.
5. The Other Woman
Definitely a movie that will have you shouting “girl power!” while watching three scorned women taking vengeance on their dishonest partner.
The typical characters will make you forget about comparing yourself to others and questioning what you could’ve done better.
Sometimes, things happen for a reason, and that reason doesn’t necessarily have to be you. It was his loss, not yours.
6. John Tucker Must Die
If you’re still on the revenge train, this a good flick on taking pure vengeance on the one who broke your heart.
It’s the classic “set up” movie that will show you the redeeming qualities and life lessons some can still get.
All in all, it’s still a good flick when you’re craving for that bit of payback you might wish you could get in real life.
7. Magic Mike
Are you off the revenge train? Good. Then hop onto the guilty pleasure track and take your mind off things while enjoying some eye-candy for an hour and a half.
It’s not something that just guys do. Girls can enjoy a bit of skin and dancing to music as well.
Ignore the plotline and the story, and only let your eyes feast. And, possibly, let your mind wander.
If you want to remember that you will have to get back out there, this movie will be an excellent source of how it all starts.
It’s funny, it’s light-hearted, and it reminds you of one of the most inspirational quotes in romantic comedies: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”.
Don’t fret about what you lost, and instead focus on what you have.
9. The Ugly Truth
Finding that right person doesn’t have to be the main focus of your life. It’s not a job, it’s not a product, it cannot be Googled and found. It just happens, and this will remind you that you can never know when you’ll get those butterflies again.
It will definitely remind you that love is not a fairy tale. There are cold, hard truths that you always knew, but might’ve denied and it ended with unrealistic expectations of what your broken relationship should’ve been.
10. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
Is it a guideline of what not to do? We hope not, because there are some very clear things you definitely shouldn’t do and shouldn’t have done.
However, we all make mistakes. At least this will remind us of it in a funny and, albeit, a little exaggerated manner.
If anything, it’s a true example that finding love could lead you on to roads you didn’t dare to travel before. And that’s something to look forward to, even though it hurts now.
