Youtube sensation Shane Dawson who has millions of followers on Youtube and has a fit body today was once extremely over-weight. It’s hard to believe that he shed a massive 150 pounds which is amazing. So how did he do it? Let’s find out.

What motivated Shane Dawson to lose weight?

We all have those moments where we reach the tipping point; when we decide to stop fooling around and take the first step toward change. For Shane this moment came when he went to an amusement park with his entire senior class and was kicked off a Roller-Coaster ride because he was too big to fit in.

A similar thing happened during his graduation day when he was not able to fit into the regular graduation gown and they had to put together two graduation gowns for him to fit.

Both these moments deeply scared Shane and the very next day after graduation he decided that enough was enough and that he was going to lose weight no matter what.

How Did Shane Dawson Loose so much weight?

Shane was asked this question by one of his fans during Vidcon. The question asked was ‘How did you lose weight and how do you stay so fit?’

And the answer Shane gave was this:

As most of you guys know, I lost around 150 pounds, that’s the only reason I had a job at Jenny Craig. I think honestly, losing weight is about eating less and exercise but I think it’s more of a mental situation.

For me it was, because I was always an emotional eater. But then I started making Youtube videos and I was putting so much effort into it that I just stopped thinking about it (that I was over weight) and I was kind of putting my emotions in the right place; a creative place. I mean just do something you really like doing instead of focusing on negative things.

Shane has also told in various interviews that he completely cut out fast foods, started running and going to the gym every single day to lose weight.

So the secret to Shane’s weight loss is eating healthy, running every day, going to the gym and refocusing his energy into creative pursuits.

How Can I Lose Weight like Shane Dawson?

Here’s what you can learn from Shane’s weight loss journey.

1. Channel your energy in the right direction

As Shane said, stop focusing your energy on thinking negatively about your body image. Stop thinking that you are over-weight and instead start focusing your energy on the right things.

Connect with people who share similar passions, listen to your favorite music, paint, dance, take up gardening, travel, enjoy nature, paint. In other words, let go of your hidden fears about your body image and start pursuing things that you enjoy and invest your energy there.

2. Eat the right foods

Let’s face it, the number one reason why people gain weight is because of junk food. Shane was addicted to junk food growing up. In-fact, he had a difficult childhood and used food as a coping mechanism. This made him an emotional eater. But once he made up his mind, he decided to massively cut down on fast food and instead started eating whole foods that were high on nutrients and low on salt and sugars.

Similar to Shane, you need to make a conscious choice to to cut down on fast foods (processed foods, sugary foods etc.) and start introducing healthy whole foods into your diet. These foods are high in nutrients that improve your metabolism and help your body burn fat.

One option is to find healthy alternatives to your favorite foods. For instance, if you like pizza try eating cauliflower crust pizza, if you like burgers try making black bean veggie burgers.

3. Eat consciously

One of the most effective ways to cut down on junk foods is to become a conscious eater. To do this, start with making time for food. Do not eat while watching T.V., talking on the phone or doing work as they distract you from what you are eating.

Also, become conscious of what you are eating and how it makes you feel later. Food should make you feel energetic and not drained and bloated.

As you become conscious of your food, you will automatically begin to lose interest in foods that are bad for you.

4. Do some low impact exercises everyday

Shane goes to the gym everyday. In-fact if you watch some of his older videos carefully, there are many videos in which he says that it’s time to go to the gym. 5. Be consistent

It’s easy to feel motivating and enthusiastic when you are starting out but you need to carry this momentum throughout your weight-loss journey and even carry it beyond to ensure that you do not gain weight back. So start small, but be consistent. Make it a point to do it day after day without a break until it turns into a habit. Once that happens, you are bound to succeed in your weight loss goals.
